If you’re on the hunt for a crochet project that’s both simple and uniquely stylish, the “Twist to the Classic Beanie” by Morine’s Shop is a must-try. This pattern offers a delightful twist—literally—to the traditional beanie, making it a standout addition to your crochet repertoire.

Twist to the Classic Beanie crochet pattern sample is made using a burgundy worsted weight yarn with a black pom pom. The verticle chevron texture of the stitch adds a unique element to the hat. The hat is flat on a white surface with green leaves on the lower left. Text on the image reads "Twist to the Classic Beanie by Morine's Shop Pattern Review".

I love the colour palette of this hat. The burgundy with the black pompom is definitely something I would wear.

When it comes to crochet hat patterns, I tend to pick ones that catch my eye. There are so many to choose from and the first thing I tend to notice is the colour palette. After the colours, I will then pick a pattern based on texture, interesting stitch design, or many other reasons. I do like to customize my patterns using colours and different yarns than the designers, but sometimes the designers just get it so perfect for you that you cant help but follow their lead.

Unfortunately, the designer does not list what yarn they used to create this pattern. The skein on the pictures on the blog is without its label so I can only guess as to which yarn to use.

Design and Construction

The beanie features a charming wavy effect achieved through intervals of increases and decreases, providing a fresh take on the classic silhouette. Worked primarily in the back loop only, it boasts a lovely ridged texture that adds depth and interest to the design. The pattern is worked flat and then seamed, making it approachable for those who prefer flat crocheting.

Sizing

Flexibility is a highlight of this pattern. The free version offers a size that comfortably fits most teens and adults. For those seeking a broader range, the purchasable PDF includes seven additional sizes, accommodating everyone from newborns to large adults. This inclusivity ensures you can craft matching beanies for family and friends of all ages.

Materials and Yarn

To bring this beanie to life, you’ll need approximately 230 yards of #4 worsted weight yarn and a 5 mm crochet hook.

Solid colored yarns are recommended to highlight the textured stitches effectively. If you opt for variegated yarns, pairing them with a solid color can enhance stitch definition, ensuring the intricate details aren’t lost.

While the designer does not recommend a specific yarn for this pattern, I would opt for a 100% wool yarn like Knit Pick’s Swish Worsted Superwash Merino. Their colour Hollyberry appears to be very similar to the one chosen by the designer. Each skein is approximately 110 yards so I would purchase 3 to be safe but you may be able to get away with only 2 skeins of this yarn.

I also love the colour Rainforest Heather.

You can also add a decorative pompom. I like to buy these value packs and have them on hand for any hat that needs one.

Skill Level and Techniques

Designed with beginners in mind, this pattern employs simple stitches, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet. The use of back loop only stitches introduces a subtle challenge that helps novices build their skills without feeling overwhelmed. The pattern’s straightforward construction ensures a satisfying and confidence-boosting project.

Availability

The “Twist to the Classic Beanie” pattern is accessible in two formats. A free version is available, offering the standard teen/adult size. For crocheters desiring a full range of sizes, the comprehensive PDF can be purchased on Ravelry for $4.50 USD. This flexibility allows you to choose the option that best suits your needs.
