I have made too many simple hats recently. Because of this, I have really been drawn to hats with texture.
I love the combination of bobble stitches and half double crochet to create this bead stitch toque (yes, I’m Canadian). This hat would be perfect for the spring or fall when you want a hat but do not need something extremely warm. While the texture is beautiful, the gaps between the bobble stitches would not be ideal for -20 degree days. Keeping that head warm is a must!
If I were to make this as a fall hat, I could use acrylic yarn like the designers suggests. If you are somewhere that gets quite chilly then I might be recommended that you look into a wool blend.

Design and Construction
The hat is designed to be worked in the round from the top down, incorporating alternating rounds of bead stitches and half double crochets. This combination creates a visually appealing texture that stands out. The hat is finished with a post stitch ribbing along the bottom, adding a neat and stretchy edge. Topping it off with a faux fur pom-pom gives it a trendy and polished look.
Sizing
The free version of the pattern is available in an adult size, suitable for most head circumferences. For those interested in making the hat for different age groups, the purchasable PDF includes additional sizes, ensuring a perfect fit for everyone from children to adults.
Materials and Yarn
To crochet this hat, you’ll need approximately 186 yards of aran weight yarn. The pattern suggests using All Things You Essential Acrylic, Tweeds, but any comparable yarn should work well. A 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook is recommended to achieve the desired gauge and drape.
I could not find that yarn anywhere – the best I could find is a few references to All Things You yarns being discontinued. Because of this, I would like to recommend 2 other acrylics that I like. Knit Picks Brava Worsted is available in a large variety of colours – it is a worsted and not aran but I find it to be a slightly thicker worsted. Red Heart Super Saver is also a worsted weight yarn than is frequently considered to be aran weight. It comes in a ton of colours.
For the pompom, I would recommend buying a pack of faux fur pompoms so you have many on hand for all the future hats that will need one.
Skill Level and Techniques
This pattern is suitable for crocheters with an intermediate skill level. Familiarity with working in the round, post stitches, and the bead stitch is beneficial. For those new to the bead stitch, the designer provides a full video tutorial to guide you through the process, making it an excellent opportunity to expand your crochet skills.
Availability
The “Bead Stitch Hat” pattern is accessible in two formats. A free version is available on 5 Little Monsters, offering the standard adult size. For those seeking a broader range of sizes, the comprehensive PDF can be purchased from Ravelry for $5.00 USD. This flexibility allows you to choose the option that best suits your needs.
