Pattern Name: Dragon Amigurumi
Designer: Rye Westerly
Craft: Crochet
Project Type: Toy/Amigurumi
Yarn Weight: Aran weight
Suggested Yarn: none
Design and Construction
This dragon features a classic design with a long body, wings, and four legs. When properly stuffed, it stands upright, showcasing its detailed limbs and wings. The pattern allows for flexibility in wing construction; they can be left floppy or made stiffer by adding stuffing. While the designer does not provide instructions for incorporating wire, adventurous crafters might consider this for added pose-ability.
Sizing
Upon completion, the dragon measures approximately:
- Length: 16 inches (40.5 cm)
- Wingspan: 12 inches (30.5 cm)
- Height: 4 inches (10 cm)
These dimensions make it a substantial yet manageable project, suitable for display or imaginative play.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern recommends using aran weight yarn, paired with a 4.25 mm (G) crochet hook. Specific yardage and gauge details are not provided, allowing crafters the freedom to select their preferred yarns and colors. This flexibility enables personalization, whether aiming for a traditional dragon appearance or a more whimsical creation.
While this pattern recommends using aran, I would probably chose to make this with WeCrochet: Brava Worsted or WeCrochet: Brava Bulky. Brava is one of my favourite acrylic yarns, especially for amigurumi or toy patterns as it holds up well to washing and kids being kids. I would probably opt for the bulky version for a slightly larger dragon.
Skill Level and Techniques
Suitable for intermediate crocheters, the pattern involves:
- Amigurumi Techniques: Crafting 3D shapes through crocheting in the round.
- Assembly: Attaching limbs and wings to the body.
The designer welcomes feedback on the pattern’s clarity and organization, indicating a commitment to continuous improvement.
